The KFC Zinger Sandwich costs $5.99 and carries 490 cal, which makes it the lightest full-size sandwich on the Sandwiches & Wraps menu despite being the dearest. It is built differently from the rest: the breast is marinated in spice before it is breaded, so the heat is in the meat rather than painted on afterwards. Shredded lettuce replaces the pickles and the Colonel's mayo goes on top. It eats fresher and cleaner than the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, with a slower, drier heat that sits at the back rather than the front.

The Zinger is KFC's international sandwich, sold across Asia, the Middle East and the UK for decades before the US menu picked it up, and the build shows it. Lettuce instead of pickles is a different idea about what a fried chicken sandwich is for. At $5.99 it costs more than the Classic and the Spicy, and the honest reason to pay it is the marinade rather than the size. A Zinger is not a Classic with hot sauce added, and the two recipes are not interchangeable. The spice goes into the marinade with the buttermilk, hours before the flour appears, which is what makes the heat taste like part of the chicken rather than something spread on it.

Tips

  • Shred the lettuce properly fine. Long pieces slide out of the sandwich on the first bite and take the mayo with them.
  • An overnight marinade is not optional if you want the heat to taste built in. Four hours is the floor.
  • Lettuce goes on top of the fillet, not underneath. Heat wilts it, and a wilted layer under hot chicken turns to water.

Variations

  • Add a slice of cheese under the lettuce for something close to the Zinger Stacker sold in other markets.
  • Halve the cayenne in both marinade and coating for a version children will eat.
  • Swap the mayo for a garlic mayo, which is how several international markets serve it.

490 cal, the lowest of any full-size KFC sandwich. The lettuce and the absence of a heavy sauce account for most of the difference against the Spicy Chicken Sandwich.

The Zinger marinates the breast in spice before breading and finishes with lettuce. The Spicy uses a plain filet and gets its heat from spicy mayo. Different heat, different texture, and the Zinger is lighter.

Moderately, and it lasts. Because the spice is in the marinade it does not fade between bites the way a sauce-based heat does. It starts milder than the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and stays with you longer.

The marinated fillet is a separate product line from the plain filet the other sandwiches use. It is not a bigger sandwich, it is a different one.
